The Stonebridge Automatic Folding Candle Lantern is a folding candle lantern manufactured and patented by Charles H. Stonebridge in 1906. Due to its revolutionary structure, it quickly became one of the most popular camping items. Shortly after its development, it was used by the Canadian Army and European armies during World War I, which broke out. Stonebridge's lanterns are also recommended in many camping how-to books and magazine articles published by the U.S. Army. Stonebridge's lanterns were produced in models made of galvanized steel, brass, aluminum, etc. The models recommended by the authors of outdoor guidebooks at the time differed, but aluminum was not generally recommended in the past because it was very soft and could not withstand repeated use in camping. By the way, the most produced were made of galvanized steel, and they can still be found on the second-hand market in the United States.

"Structure and Features"

Stonebridge Lanterns were original and functional lanterns, with ingenious features in every area, such as a windshield designed to protect the candle flame in strong winds, a shade that allows smoke to flow efficiently, and a screen made of isinglass (※), which is more impact resistant than plate glass.

Isinglass is a natural material that is more durable than glass, but hard impacts or pressure can leave behind white, cloudy spots that cannot be repaired.

"Original and Replica (※)"

The original Stonebridge lantern had an adjustable vent to control the amount of air entering the lantern. There were six rows of round holes (vent holes) on the bottom of the lantern to allow water to drain when it rained, but these holes sometimes had the problem of letting melted wax out. Also, the words "Made in the USA" engraved on the shade are a feature that is only found on the original.

On the other hand, the replica has improved the original's drawbacks, is durable and rust-resistant, has no vent holes to prevent wax from dripping from the bottom, and the screen can be replaced if necessary. The factory has now moved to India, so the "Made in the USA" label is gone, but it seems certain that the later replica is more functionally superior in terms of practical use.
