Iga ware

Iga ware is pottery made in and around Iga City, Mie Prefecture. It has excellent fire resistance and is suitable for clay pots and heat-resistant tableware. It was born in the Nara period and its name spread nationwide as pottery for the tea ceremony during the Azuchi-Momoyama period, when "wabi-sabi" and tea ceremony culture flourished. Currently, it is mainly used to make everyday utensils. Iga clay does not immediately pass heat, but instead stores heat, so it transfers heat to ingredients well and is suitable for cooking. Of all the clays harvested in Japan, Iga clay is the only one that is fire-resistant enough to be used for clay pots.
