Koishiwara ware

Oishiwara ware was the first pottery designated as a traditional craft in Japan. It is named after the place name Oishiwara in Fukuoka Prefecture, Kyushu, and dates back to 1682, when Lord Kuroda brought pottery techniques from China to this region.

By adding a new twist to existing pottery techniques, Oishiwara ware established the concept of "beauty in practicality," which is the idea that "beauty can be found in practicality."

Oishiwara ware is a sister kiln of Onta ware, which developed from there. Onta ware in Oita Prefecture, located over the mountains from Oishiwara in Fukuoka Prefecture, is a short distance away and the style is similar.

One of the characteristics of Oishiwara ware is the traditional technique of creating a dotted pattern on the surface using a tool called a tobikanna (flying plane). This is a traditional technique in which a dried piece of pottery is turned on a potter's wheel and the tobikanna (flying plane) is used to catch and fly the pieces.
