Bush Craft Inc.

In modern times, it is an outdoor style that allows you to become more one with nature. If you separate the words, you get "bush" and "craft," but when you combine them, the meaning changes to "bushcraft" = wisdom for life. Long before we were born, our ancestors lived in harmony with nature. They had the wisdom to live with the forest. Bushcraft is an "old and new style" that reminds us of that. Bushcraft techniques start with knifework and firemaking.

Bush Craft Modern Scandi Allocas Olive Drab Entry Level Knife Stainless Steel

As of July 2021, the Modern Scandi ALOKAS has undergone minor changes, with the following changes: - Six color variations are now available. - The BushCraft Inc. logo has been added to the sheath. - The packaging has been completely redesigned. A beginner's knife for bushcraft and camping. While it is packed with elements that can be used for bushcraft, it is also easy for those who want to start bushcraft to pick up. The product name Modern scandi is a coined word by Bush Craft Inc., but it means that the blade is a "modern" arrangement (※1) of the historic Scandinavian edge knife born in the Scandinavian region of Northern Europe. In addition, ALOKAS means rookie in Finnish. We aimed to create a knife that is suitable for beginners and easy to use for anyone.

Blade

The knife is made of cost-effective stainless steel (5Cr15MoV). It is rust-resistant (※2) and very easy to sharpen. With a blade length of about 100 mm and a thickness of 2 mm, this knife can be used for all purposes, and has a sharpened Scandinavian edge, making it suitable for feather sticks, which are the basis of bushcraft, and batoning to make kindling. The edge of the blade is quite sharp, making it excellent as a striker for metal matches.

Handle/Grip

The olive green handle features an eye-catching honeycomb pattern. The irregular barrel-shaped handle has a finger rest (hilt) to keep your fingers safe, making it easy to hold and use. The moderately uneven honeycomb rubber grip is slip-resistant no matter what direction you apply pressure from, making it easy to use. The recess at the bottom of the handle is also designed to make it easy to use the knife with your little finger or to push it down with your palm.

Sheath

The plastic sheath has the advantage that the blade hardly touches the inside when the knife is stored, so the blade is less likely to corrode during storage. Another advantage is that it can be washed with water if it gets dirty. The belt loop on the back is clip-shaped, so it can be attached to a waist belt without removing the belt. In addition, the belt loop clip rotates by clicking every 30 degrees, so it can be fixed at any angle, making it easy for the user to hold it in the position they prefer.

*1 What is Scandinavian edge?

There are various types of edge shapes for knives, but the Scandinavian edge is a blade shape that starts from a certain part of the blade, passes through the bevel starting line, and then draws a flat shape toward the blade. As the name suggests, it is one of the blade shapes that has been popular around the Scandinavian Peninsula since ancient times. The traditional Scandinavian edge starts with the bevel starting at a height of the middle of the blade or higher, while the modern trend is that the bevel starts at a relatively low position. This is because when comparing knives with the same blade thickness and width...

・Traditional: The angle of the blade is sharp, making it sharp and suitable for fine work. Edge retention is sacrificed.

・Modern: The blade is blunt and tough, making it suitable for heavy-duty work. Sharpness is limited to practical use.

The following characteristics emerge.

In Northern Europe, where different knives are used for different purposes, traditional deep beveled edges have been preferred, but in modern times, the advantages of knives from Anglo-Saxon regions such as the UK, US, and Canada, which prefer long blade retention, have been adopted, and it is assumed that the traditional shape has gradually changed. Looking at this product, ALOKAS, from the perspective of the starting point of the bevel, it could be classified as a modern Scandinavian edge. However, since the blade is not very thick, at about 2mm, it feels closer to a traditional Scandinavian edge, making it a well-balanced knife that makes use of the advantages of each.
